Road Trip in a CX-3 to Poteet, Texas, for Friendship and Motivation

Poteet, Texas is known for fresh strawberries. Every spring, tents line Capital of Texas Highway in Austin, the red canvas standing out against the white limestone walls along the road. Poteet itself is small - a little more than 3,000 people, according to the last census - but mighty, the hometown of not only delectable fruit but country music legend George Strait.

It's not a George Strait song that runs through my mind as I sip strawberry reserve wine at Strawberry Pines resort that weekend. It's the namesake song for what is swirling in my wine glass, "Strawberry Wine" by Deana Carter.

The Poteet Country Winery opened its doors twenty years ago, built from the recognition of a need to quickly use the bounty of strawberries ready for harvest every year. The delicate fruits perish quickly, and by turning berries into wine they have a way to use most, if not all, of the crop that is available. I tried the signature Poteet Strawberry Wine, the Strawberry-Mustang Wine, the Strawberry Reserve, and the Blueberry Reserve. I liked them all, and was surprised that the favorite that emerged for me was the Blueberry Reserve. Close your eyes and imagine drinking the smoothest port you can find, but without the heat at the end. That's what the Blueberry Reserve tastes like.

Strawberry Pines invited me and 14 other writers and creatives to spend the weekend there, both for us to have a chance to spend time exchanging tips, setting goals, and motivating each other... and for us to get to know Strawberry Pines and all of its amenities. It's a beautiful and serene place, and each of us found something to take back home with us.

For me, part of that journey was the drive to and from Poteet. I picked up my friend Susanne, and we had two hours there and back to catch up. That uninterrupted time together is precious when we have kids and jobs and volunteer projects at home; we love our families fiercely and also cherish the time to gather energy with the people who share our vision and dreams.

Mazda lent me a CX-3 for the week, and it was a zippy ride with plenty of room for the two of us and all of our luggage, snacks, and technology periphery.

Once we arrived, we met our friends joyously and the mood was festive as we enjoyed wine, appetizers, and dinner by Matt Martinez, the former personal chef of George Strait. The 100-year-old barn was the perfect setting for us to sit through dinner and dessert, and the homemade churros were so good I nearly ate two portions myself. If you're looking for a getaway in Texas, don't miss Strawberry Pines - they have everything you need for a wonderful experience, including an on-call masseuse, personal chef, yoga instructor, and a fully stocked pond for fishing. The houses are cozy and well-appointed, and each one of us left there feeling whole again.

Want to know what Mazda is doing to make the world a little better? Check out their Drive4Good program.

Mazda Drive for Good was created as a way to unify the way in which Mazda, Mazda employees and the thousands of dealer partners across the United States, give back to the communities in which we do business. Since the program launched in 2013, the combined Mazda team has donated more than $18.4 million and has completed more than 213,000 service hours – the equivalent of 24 years of time – with an additional 50,000 hours pledged for 2018.

While the amount of money we donate is extremely important, what really differentiates this program is the time that we give back as an organization. Not only does it show our dedication to the greater community, but it shows me, as an employee, that my company cares to support the non-profit organizations that I feel passionate about.
