Three Reasons to Attend the Miami International Auto Show

Disclosure: The Miami International Auto Show organized and sponsored our trip to the Miami Auto Show in 2018 to celebrate the re-opening of the Miami Beach Convention Center. All opinions are our own.

It’s no secret that we love car shows. But throw in gorgeous weather, an Art Deco city, and a beach, and that’s a whole level up. The 2018 Miami International Auto Show (MIAS) is hosted inside the Miami Beach Convention Center, which recently received a major facelift to the tune of $620 million.

In 2017, Hurricane Irma hit South Florida and forced the cancellation of the MIAS, a major undertaking that resulted in a lot of disappointment. Work was shut down in order to secure the construction site, and Irma forced a revised plan to reinforce steel structures to support the parking structure.

In September of 2018, the Miami International Auto Show returned triumphantly with the culmination of its three-year renovation. Improvements include 263,000 more square feet of space, 10 new meeting rooms, and LEED Silver certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is a recognized symbol of sustainability achievement.

The convention center’s exterior was the result of a collaboration between Fentress Architects and Arquitectonica, and an aluminum and glass creation was built to remind visitors of waves on the beach.

Stay tuned, because there’s more: in 2018, voters approved a plan to build an 800-room convention center hotel and said yes to $439 million in bonds to finance public safety, infrastructure and parks projects. The $362 million hotel will be built on a city-owned parking lot next to the convention center.

Fun Fact: In August 1961, the Convention Center was the meeting place for a youth convention set up by The American Lutheran Church. Among the notable speakers was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Do we really need to give you reasons to head to Miami for the 2019 show? Just in case, here are our top three:

MIAS Miami Beach.jpg

ONE: South Beach, balmy and gorgeous

It’s only one of the most famous beachfront properties in the country, so don’t miss it. While you’re there, take a walk to the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens and get lost in nature. Or if your mental getaway consists of shopping bags and pampering, Lincoln Road is only one block from the convention center. Lincoln Road is a world-class pedestrian mall with shops, dining, and entertainment is steps away.

TWO: Unique and Award-Winning Cars

In 2018, the Southern Automotive Media Association (SAMA) presented the 2019 Genesis Essentia Concept vehicle as its “Star of the Show.” Nissan’s 2019 Altima was selected as “Car of the Show,” Ford’s 2019 Ranger was selected “Pickup Truck of the Show”, the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace was named the “Eco Vehicle of the Show,” and the 2018 Jeep Wrangler was named “SUV of the Show.”

The Classic Cars exhibit is sponsored by the Antique Automobile Club of America’s South Florida Region, and offers one of the largest, local antique automobile presentations. Havana Classics, another collection at the event, showcases antique cars reminiscent of old Miami and Cuba. And the ever-popular Topless in Miami exhibit will feature the top convertibles as judged by SAMA.

THREE: MIAS Cares, to the Tune of $400K

Not only is the auto show affordable and fun for families, the Miami International Auto Show invests in the community via the Ronald McDonald House Foundation in Miami. In 2018, the auto show presented a check for $15,000 to Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida, bringing the grand total over the years to nearly $400,000.

What other incentives do you need? We’ll see you there.
